ABOUT ABOUT

Win 2 tickets to see Hamilton or Freestyle Love Supreme on Broadway! A raffle will be held at the start of the program (for in-person attendees only).

The artistic journey of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In the Heights has spanned decades. From his undergraduate days at Wesleyan University, to the show’s Broadway debut and Tony win for Best Musical in 2008, to its big screen release in 2021, there are truly hundreds of stories to tell. Luckily, they have now all been recorded by Mr. Miranda and his collaborators, Quiara Alegría Hudes and Jeremy McCarter in the stunning new book In The Heights: Finding Home.

The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center is honored to welcome Lin-Manuel Miranda to talk about the creative life of In the Heights, the evolution of his play and chasing the universal question: Where do I belong?

Mr. Miranda will be joined in conversation by co-author Jeremy McCarter and Tommy Kail, director of Broadway’s In The Heights.

Mr. Miranda is a Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award-winning songwriter, actor and director. He is the creator and original star of Broadway’s Tony-winning Hamilton and In the Heights. His additional Broadway credits include Freestyle Love Supreme (Co-Founder, Guest Star, Special Tony Award Recipient), Bring It On: The Musical (co-composer/co-lyricist, Tony nomination for Best Musical), and West Side Story (2009 revival, Spanish translations). Mr. Miranda is the recipient of the 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award, the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors and the 2019 Portrait of a Nation Prize. He received an Emmy Award with Tom Kitt for their song, “Bigger” from the 67th Annual Tony Awards. Mr. Miranda, and The Miranda Family, are active supporters of initiatives that increase people of color’s representation throughout the arts and government, ensure access to women’s reproductive health, and promote resilience in Puerto Rico. TV/Film Credits include: Vivo, In the Heights, Hamilton, His Dark Materials, Fosse/Verdon, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Saturday Night Live, We the People, Sesame Street, Moana, Mary Poppins Returns, Encanto and his film directorial debut, tick, tick… BOOM!. He lives with his family in New York.

Jeremy McCarter is the author of Young Radicals and co-author, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, of the #1 New York Times bestseller Hamilton: The Revolution. He is the founder and executive producer of Make-Believe Association, a Chicago-based production company. He spent five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater and has served on the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He has written about culture and politics for New York magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other publications. He lives in Chicago with his family.

Thomas Kail is an American theatre director, known for directing the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of In the Heights and Hamilton, garnering the 2016 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for the latter. Kail was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018.
